Ryan Reynolds. Actor. Marketing Genius.

Have you ever seen the Aviation Gin ad where Ryan Reynolds hired an actress days after she featured in a disastrous Peloton ad? Or the Match.com ad featuring Satan looking for love in 2020 when Covid came along?

Both ads were viral hits. And rightly so. And both ads were created by his very own marketing agency Maximum Effort Marketing which recently merged with MNTN.

After reading an interview with Ryan Reynolds in Entrepreneur.com — and watching those ads again — I’d say there’s 5 keys to his marketing agency’s success:

Now, let’s dive in.

1/ Every great story starts with a character…

Each of Ryan’s ads focuses on people, the character of the story…

2/ Emotional hooks that draw you in to the characters world…

Having people/characters in the ads means it’s much easier to create emotions which tap into our feelings…

3/ Tap into current events and culture…

Ryan does an amazing job of tapping into Culture, as in what’s happening right now…today…

4/ Executing on the creative at lightning speed…

Tapping into culture is great, but to make it relevant and timely you can’t wait 2 months to create the ad. You need to act NOW. Move fast…

5/ He entertains and makes us laugh…

As the guy who created the promos for Deadpool, making funny ads looks like it comes easy. But making funny ads that don’t offend is a skill.
