The Successful Copy…And You Should Too.

A few weeks back I came across a great interview with Jay-Z on a show hosted by LeBron James — called ‘The Shop’…(cool barbershop vibe)

And on the show, Jay-Z said something I’ve believed about marketing for a long time.

“The Successful Copy”.

I’ve heard that same phrase said differently over the years, including…

  • “Good artists copy, Great artists steal”
  • “Success Leaves Clues”
  • “Model what’s working”.

Maybe I love this idea because I’m naturally not the most creative person. It’s a character flaw when you work in marketing sometimes.

But what I lack in creativity, I make up for in being a curious student of marketing.

Always learning.

Always curious.

I enjoy nothing more than spending my spare time time studying marketing, storytelling, and copywriting.

I love finding good ideas and copying them into my Notion Marketing system for a date in the future.

I’m constantly looking at successful marketing campaigns and breaking them down to see why they worked and how I can model them in my own marketing efforts.

As Jay-Z said in the interview,

“…everything should be an inspiration…and you need to draw ideas from that”.

He noted that Picasso’s ‘original’ ideas came from African Masks.

LeBron James himself modeled many of his ‘moves’ from Michael Jordan.

But the key lesson here is this…you MUST add your own spin to it.

It’s ok to take ideas from others, flip them, then add your own sauce to it. Make it your own strategy.

If I was ever to write my ten marketing principles for success, this would be number one for sure.

So, if you find yourself struggling for inspiration like I often do, just remember:

The Successful Copy. And you should too.
